A Study on the Self-rated Health of the Elderly in Seoul According to Their Preparation for Old Age Using Hierarchical Linear Model (HLM)

Abstract
This study aims to provide practical information for improving the elderly¡¯s health. For this purpose, this study analyzed effects of the preparation for old age on the Self-rated health of the elderly in Seoul. This study was analyzed relationships among variables of 1,429 cases of the elderly, 25 districts in the Seoul City Welfare Panel. The statistical analysis was performed multi-level analysis using the HLM(Hierarchical Linear and Nonlinear Modeling) 6.02 version. Multi-level analysis is fit for analysis of multidimensional data like personal and community level data. The result of the analysis of fixed effects indicate that the Self-rated health of the elderly would be greater for people who have a higher level of preparation for old age, a economical activity, a lower diseases, and a more health and medical resources. In addition, the Psycho-social preparation for aging which is a individual factor showed a significantly interactive effect on health and medical resources and Community confidence which are community factors. Health and medical resources and the number of 65 years of age or older have an interactive effect on the relationship between physical preparation for aging and self-rated health of the elderly in Seoul. Based on these results, this study suggested practical and political implications for improving health of the elderly in Seoul.
